Cognos, an IBM Company is sponsoring a new offshore yacht race developed by JOG (Junior Offshore Group). This partnership has allowed the creation of a new sporting event open to people from all walks of life who share a common desire to test their personal and team abilities.

The Cognos Illingworth Challenge, which will be run by the JOG (Junior Offshore Group) will start from the JOG start line in Cowes, the UK Mecca for yachting, on 19th July 2008. The race will take competitors west out of the Solent, around Ushant to the finish off La Trinite, France one of the most popular yachting centres in the Bay of Biscay, covering a distance of approximately 400 nautical miles.

MarineTrack will supply a tracker system on board each boat taking part. Real-time race data will be relayed back, which Cognos will deliver via the web through its Cognos Now! technology. The website will enable competitors and their followers to stay up-to-the-minute on the position of the contestants throughout the race.

Cognos is about performance, innovation and achieving excellence in partnership with our customers. We pride ourselves in giving our customers the necessary skills to deliver a winning formula on a day-to-day basis” said Roy Lee, Marketing Director UK, Middle East and South Africa at Cognos. “Joining with the JOG spirit of excellence and achievement through competition, and in supporting the true Corinthian Spirit that is JOG, we are looking forward to a thrilling event.

The race is designed to be a tough challenge for all competitors, taking in technically testing tidal gates as the competing boats progress past west of the Channel Islands. Once vessels round Ushant the sea changes mood from the relatively short chop of the channel waters to the long deep swell of the French Atlantic seaboard.

The event has already attracted the cream of Corinthian Yachting and is still drawing new enquiries as the starting date draws closer.

There is also ample opportunity for spectators to watch the boats muster at Cowes North Basin, and to watch the race start, on the Isle of Wight or to view the finish at La Trinite.
