IBM Cognos Now! Operational Business Intelligence
Application Workbench
The Application Workbench is the configuration tool that lets business analysts quickly and easily set up data sources and analytic models to present current information, historical data, or aggregated views.
With a graphical, browser-based interface, the workbench requires no programming to add data sources, modify data views, define business rules, or configure user permissions.

With the Application Workbench, an administrator can:
- Configure connectivity agents to access all relevant data sources.
- Identify specific information from each data source that is required.
- Define static data sources to provide contextual information (calendar, geographies, etc.).
- Define business rules and the actions to take when business rule conditions are met.
- Identify data sets to archive for historical or trend analysis.
- Set up users, roles and permissions to ensure each user receives only the information that is relevant and necessary for their job.
- Create aggregate views and multi-dimensional cubes from all data sources to track key performance metrics. Views are aggregated summaries of large amounts of data that provide an at-a-glance display of information and metrics. Multi-dimensional cubes provide high-level summaries of information for executive monitoring, with the ability to drill-down through a hierarchy to view detailed data.
