What is IBM Cognos Axiant 4GL?
IBM Cognos Axiant 4GL is a powerful visual development workbench developed to bring forward PowerHouse applications to modern environments and create new business-critical applications.
The language underlying the IBM Cognos Axiant graphical workbench is IBM Cognos PowerHouse 4GL, and the code generated is the IBM Cognos PowerHouse syntax that you already know so well. In fact, IBM Cognos Axiant uses IBM Cognos PowerHouse 8 as the server for building client/server applications. When you want to move applications to new environments, you import IBM Cognos PowerHouse 4GL code into IBM Cognos Axiant 4GL and redeploy it to new environments—thereby extending the life of your IBM Cognos PowerHouse applications.
A Visual Development Environment
In IBM Cognos Axiant 4GL, IBM Cognos PowerHouse combines with new functionality to create a modern, visual development environment. The new functionality lets you:
Use inheritance
Define relational database structures
Graphically represent IBM Cognos PowerHouse elements, tables, and programs
Migrate IBM Cognos PowerHouse applications to new environments
Supported Deployment Topologies
IBM Cognos Axiant 4GL allows you to deploy applications to all four client/server topologies:
Server-only—where the user interface, processing, and data are all on the server. IBM Cognos PowerHouse is server-only.
Thin client—where the user interface is on the client, and the processing and data are on the server. IBM Cognos PowerHouse Client is an example of thin-client topology.
Fat client—where the user interface and processing are on the client and the data is on the server.
Mobile—where the user interface, processing, and data are on a standalone client. Mobile clients can be connected to a server in order to integrate with central resources.
Some business functions belong on the server (production reports, for example), and some belong on the client (client/server query, for example). Since Axiant 4GL supports all of the client/server topologies, developers can optimize the deployment of business functions in the application.
