Description

Learn how you can benefit from the strong connection between business intelligence from Cognos and IBM's infrastructure and middleware technologies.

Host James MacCuaig interviews Rupert Bonham Carter, senior director for the Cognos-IBM alliance at Cognos. Bonham Carter describes how customers can use the combined technologies of the two firms to break down data silos, unlock decades of collected data, and present a "smooth data surface" to your users.

With this goal in mind, the discussion covers the importance of a mutually beneficial move to a modern, services-oriented architecture (SOA) made by both Cognos and IBM for the sake of open standards, leveraging existing IT assets, and an open data strategy.

By way of example, Bonham Carter comments on the Cognos IBM Special Edition product which bundles Cognos business intelligence abilities such as analysis, query, and reporting, along with IBM middleware such as WebSphere Application Server, DB2 Universal Database for Cognos content store, and an http server - all at no extra cost to the customer. Bonham Carter goes on to point how customers benefit through a rapid installation, configuration, development, and deployment of all these abilities in one package.

Later, MacCuaig moves the discussion to the enterprise search space and the application of business intelligence reporting to formerly inaccessible, unstructured data through Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA).

Bonham Carter provides two real world examples of the combined Cognos IBM deployments. First he describes how financial services and banking clients can address issues such as risk analysis, fraud detection, and branch profitability. The second example describes a public sector implementation that allows police forces to transform manual data handling into predictive analysis, graphical crime mapping, and more.
