Canadian Air Transport Security Authority Standardizes on Cognos BI to Drive Consistent Enterprise Reporting and Analysis

– Canadian crown corporation's business intelligence initiative improves incidence reporting and mobilization while reducing operational costs –

BURLINGTON, MA October 11, 2005- Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence and corporate performance management (CPM), today announced that the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), the crown corporation responsible for passenger screening at all airports across Canada, is using Cognos Business Intelligence (BI) as its enterprise standard for reporting and analysis.

Created in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, CATSA faced the immediate challenge of managing Canada’s air transport security initiatives quickly and accurately. At the same time, the crown corporation had to build a new enterprise from scratch. Having to work with disparate data from Canada’s 89 airports and the over 4,000 individuals who screen all air passengers and airport workers accessing restricted areas, CATSA recognized the imperative to creating a more uniform approach to enterprise reporting and analysis.

With Cognos BI, CATSA now merges all of its data from various sources into one location. Centralizing and simplifying information access ensures reporting accuracy at all levels of the organization. This enables CATSA management to easily check and cross-reference information across the enterprise. It also allows the security authority to track incidents and specific trends, and respond to them in a timely manner. By reviewing and improving operational processes, CATSA has streamlined all costs. To date, Cognos BI is delivering savings of approximately $10 million (CDN) on an annual basis.

Building on this early success with Cognos, CATSA is now developing an operational dashboard to monitor daily performance measures and alert officials of variances in results versus targets. In addition, Cognos BI is being implemented to report on CATSA’s Balanced Scorecard, which is the corporation’s strategic map to achieving its long-term objectives.

“Our success depends on the accuracy and timeliness of our data. We are able to deliver an efficient, effective, life-saving operation because of our business intelligence management,” said Jacques Duchesneau, president and chief executive officer at CATSA. “This is one reason why Canada is a world leader in air security.”

“Passenger and personnel screening is the first line of defense in ensuring a safe and secure national air transport system. Given the complexity and importance of this responsibility, subpar performance is not an option. Having the right information at their fingertips is paramount to CATSA’s ability to quickly and efficiently recognize and resolve critical issues,” said Dave Laverty, senior vice president of global marketing at Cognos. “Having worked closely with CATSA over the past two years, we can speak firsthand about their commitment to embracing the strategic values of performance management.”
