Cognos Chooses IBM to Help Deliver on Demand Solutions to Meet Government and Insurance Industry Customer Needs

– Joins IBM PartnerWorld Industry Networks and ISV Advantage Initiative enabling customers to quickly respond to
changing market opportunities on demand –

BURLINGTON, MA, June 16, 2005— Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence and corporate performance management (CPM), today announced it has achieved industry optimized status in IBM’s PartnerWorld Industry Networks. Cognos can now take advantage of IBM’s sales, marketing and technical expertise to develop and deliver on demand solutions that meet customer requirements in the government and insurance industries. Cognos also announced it has joined IBM’s ISV Advantage Initiative, a program designed to provide independent software vendors (ISVs) with technical and marketing support to help meet the specific information technology needs of small and medium business (SMB) companies.

Customers are seeking solutions that can help them better integrate processes and applications and allow them to quickly respond to changing market opportunities – all key elements in transforming to an On Demand business.

Cognos’ solutions, leveraging the industry-leading database infrastructure layer provided by IBM DB2 Universal Database, offer the benefit of flexible, intuitive data access tools integrated with an efficient, automated data management process. A typical Cognos-IBM solution includes components from the Cognos Enterprise Business Intelligence (EBI) Series, which brings together a broad range of BI capabilities including managed reporting, analysis, ad hoc query, scorecarding, visualization, and event detection.

With Cognos performance management software, financial services organizations can enable enterprise risk management, deliver customer-centric products and services, reduce operational costs, and build trust by addressing compliance issues. Cognos effectively addresses the critical business requirements of developers and distributors of insurance products and services. Cognos can address a number of the most crucial issues facing manufacturers and distributors of insurance products and services, such as Web-enabling distribution channels, improving customer service and product speed to market, enhancing claims processing, and improving access to information by both agents and customers.

In addition, Cognos performance management software can allow public sector officials to improve visibility into performance across their agencies, tie program success to budget allocation, and increase responsiveness and organizational effectiveness. Today, governments are using Cognos to help increase the quality of service to taxpayers, make the streets safer, deliver quality housing, and improve education programs for children. Governments are also employing e-business strategies to help reduce infrastructure IT costs and break down barriers to communications between departments – and across communities. In addition, Cognos is helping the public sector make effective use of the Internet for distributing and sharing information.

“Cognos allows organizations to leverage their existing applications in order to provide managers with more insight into their business performance across the government and insurance industries,” said Buell Duncan, general manager, ISV & Developer Relations, IBM. “Cognos enables clients to achieve a complete, end-to-end view of their enterprise, gaining critical insight to maximize business efficiency and profitability, resulting in improved on demand corporate performance management.”

“Performance management is vital in the government and insurance industries today – helping organizations turn strategy into action. Because we are providing value-added components to the IBM’s PartnerWorld Industry Networks, these industries can benefit from increased return on investment with Cognos’ solutions,” said Patrick O’Leary, vice president, strategic alliances, Cognos. “By expanding our partnership with IBM, we are increasing our ability to reach these companies with solutions to improve corporate performance measurement and management.”
