Global Organizations Standardize on Cognos for Business Intelligence Extranet Deployments

— Organizations leveraging rich breadth of business intelligence functionality in deploying extranets and enterprise portals for increased visibility to business performance —

BURLINGTON, MA, August 4, 2004— Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in enterprise business intelligence (BI) and corporate performance management, today announced continued industry acceptance for extranet and enterprise portal deployments leveraging Cognos Enterprise Business Intelligence Series. Cognos ReportNetT, in conjunction with Cognos PowerPlay®, provides companies with a zero-footprint solution to effectively communicate essential information in an extranet environment. Leading global organizations including healthcare, public safety, social services and welfare, marketing, and education have deployed Cognos BI as part of their extranet services.

Cognos continues to move ahead in Web and extranet deployments among OLAP customers, garnering the industry lead. With thousands of customers worldwide, Cognos uniquely understands the challenges faced by global organizations to access and distribute information within enterprise portals, extranets and "agent or dealer networks." Cognos extranets allow organizations to make targeted, prioritized information easily accessible - enhancing visibility into key success factors.

For example, within the public sector, Cognos extranets enable government agencies at all levels to enrich their e-government portals with select data from their own databases. Cognos public sector customers push out crime data, healthcare patient wait times to citizens, and billing status data to suppliers. This self-service data access helps government to increase efficiency and effectiveness - delivering better service to its constituents, and demonstrating good governance.

"With our extranet solutions, organizations can truly turn data into assets and make extranets a key competitive tool to win customers, support partners, make employees more efficient, and strengthen communication with suppliers," said Karen Williams, vice-president, product marketing, Cognos. "The high-impact analysis and information delivered by Cognos helps coordinate the extended enterprise, and create new sources of value and competitive advantage."

Cognos extranets are widely used by a variety of customers with an assortment of statistics and reports readily available on each:

British Columbia Assessment:
British Columbia Assessment, an independent Provincial Crown agency, is enabling more empowered, decisive government in BC by making critical property information available - wherever and whenever decisions need to be made. Working with Cognos, BC Assessment has implemented Assessment LinkBC, which is eliminating reporting delays by enabling clients to instantly access property data information using a Web browser. Powered by Cognos EBI Series, Assessment LinkBC lets users interact with property assessment information in a completely self-service environment. Users are able to analyze trends in property types and values, by municipality or by neighborhood, and also observe changes in these numbers over time.

"With Assessment LinkBC, provided free of charge to our local government clients, users are able to acquire vital data that's key to their operations and decision making, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," said Peter Barber, marketing manager, BC Assessment. "With a simple 'point and click', a municipal tax clerk can easily develop roll data reports and roll totals specific to any whole jurisdiction or subset, addressing local governments' unique operational and business information needs with rapid access to meaningful information."

City of Albuquerque:
City of Albuquerque has deployed the industry's broadest business intelligence solution to enable 24x7 Web-based analysis and reporting on criminal statistics, tax revenue, campaign reporting, development applications and vendor services. Continuing to extend its innovative e-government site, the new utility payment system also provides key decision-makers within the water and solid waste departments with nightly updates on the status of citizens' payments via the Internet.

"Cognos offers us a way to keep our residents informed. Everyone from the personnel in my office, to city officials to the average citizen can get daily updates on public safety information across our extranet site," said Mayor Martin Chavez, City of Albuquerque. "Cognos delivers a solution that anyone can understand, allowing them to view the information that is important to them easily. Given the scope of our project, the City demanded a solution that can deliver 24 x7. We got that and more with Cognos."

Parkway Corporation:
Parkway Corporation, a family-owned business with over 75 years of experience in the parking management and real estate development industries, uses Cognos to gain a comprehensive understanding of revenue growth; profitability; expense management and claims; and trends across individual and collective parking properties. Parkway's customers are also able to access reports and analyze personalized account information at Internet speed using the zero-footprint Cognos extranet solution.

"We are continually challenging ourselves to improve operating efficiency using cost-effective solutions and cutting-edge technology. Cognos BI has given us the ability to really understand our data and has significantly improved our decision-support and operational processes. Data for us is no longer locked away in flat spreadsheets and legacy applications -it's dimensional and can be accessed in a much more user-friendly way," said John Bryer, vice president and chief information officer, Parkway. "Executive managers now have real-time access to business data, allowing them to solve problems quickly and with accurate information, without the need for IT resources."

Schneider Logistics:
Schneider Logistics, an international lead logistics provider, deployed business intelligence from Cognos to enable its internal teams and customers to turn supply chain information into competitive advantage. Schneider Logistics manages supply chain execution for some of the world's largest companies including General Motors Service Parts Operation and Ford. With a Cognos business intelligence extranet, Schneider Logistics' teams and its customers are able to turn supply chain event information into cost saving and cost-avoidance strategies, as well as uncover and analyze operational trends and bottlenecks within the underlying supply chain processes.

"Within our customers' complex global supply chains, access to information surrounding movements and events is often as valuable as the underlying parts or inventory, and Cognos business intelligence delivers," said John Hasenzahl, director, Knowledge Services & Data Management, Schneider Logistics. "Cognos performs extremely well in our environment, providing us with the performance, scalability, and Unix support that allows us to continue to deliver new business intelligence solutions to manage and grow our customer base."
