Red Robin Selects Cognos Enterprise Planning Series

— 2002 Restaurant & Institutions Choice in Chains Award winner expands reliance on Cognos software —

Burlington, MA, Oct. 21, 2003—Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence (BI) and corporate performance management, today announced that Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (NASDAQ:RRGB), a casual dining chain specializing in gourmet burgers, has selected Cognos Enterprise Planning Series for its planning, budgeting, and forecasting. Cognos Enterprise Planning Series streamlines the performance management cycle, bringing together planning, budgeting, forecasting, consolidations, reporting, and financial analytics to drive effective decision-making.

Prior to selecting Cognos, Red Robin used spreadsheets for its planning, budgeting, and forecasting. The company felt they had outgrown this cumbersome process and needed a more automated, integrated, and reliable solution.

"Cutting the time spent on budgeting and planning processes will give Red Robin more time for in-depth analysis and turn annual budgets into rolling forecasts," said Lisa Dahl, vice president and controller, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers. "We needed greater visibility into operations, more confidence in forecasts and plans, and reduced plan cycle time - and Cognos is providing us with these critical advantages."

"Cognos Enterprise Planning Series lets us take our overall strategy plan and break it down into the activities, decisions, and initiatives necessary to achieve it," said Howard Jenkins, vice president, MIS, and CIO of Red Robin Gourmet Burgers.

Red Robin also uses Cognos' business intelligence solution for enterprise reporting and analysis for over 100 corporate-owned restaurants. Cognos reporting and analysis enables Red Robin to measure the impact of its marketing promotions and menu changes. With Cognos, Red Robin analyzes purchases from its major suppliers to negotiate better pricing and track discrepancies on contracted prices - analysis that has resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in yearly savings for Red Robin.

"Our customers are driving out inefficiencies and adding greater value within their organizations through their expansive use of our enterprise planning and business intelligence solutions - improving and directing corporate performance," said Doug Barton, vice president, Enterprise Planning Product Marketing, Cognos. "Cognos Enterprise Planning Series delivers unmatched functionality, ensuring our customers have a single, reliable, timely and accurate view of operational and financial performance expectations across all functions, at all levels of the organization."
