Cognos Delivers Proven Investment Protection,
ROI for ERP Customers

— Global enterprises use Cognos to break down information silos in multiple ERP, relational environments —

BURLINGTON MA, July 16, 2003 —Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence (BI) and corporate performance management, announced today it continues to deliver proven enterprise value to organizations with multiple transactional, relational and legacy systems. Organizations like Orlando Utilities Commission and Turner Industries are using Cognos to create a single, consistent view of information housed in a broad array of ERP solutions like PeopleSoft, SAP, Oracle, J.D. Edwards and many other operational systems.

"Today's organizations are a patchwork quilt of various relational, operational systems and legacy information systems. During a time of ERP market consolidation, organizations should look to leverage existing investments to their full potential, not replace them", said Mark Smith, CEO and SVP Research, Ventana Research. "Cognos provides a solution that helps global organizations leverage the full value of JD Edwards and PeopleSoft transactional automation system investments and providing a robust BI and Performance Management solution offering."

In the 2003 research study on "Operational Performance Management" to be published in July from Ventana Research, the research found that organizations are planning to acquire and deploy BI over ERP and Application Servers for measuring and monitoring business activities and processes. This was ranked at 93 per cent importance based on surveys with over 1,000 global organizations that were asked about their existing and planned approaches for managing operational performance. The research found significant commonalities across organizations of all sizes and vertical industries that are looking to leverage their transactional ERP system investments.

A broad cross-section of large global enterprises is using Cognos to break down silos of information within their diverse information infrastructure. Cognos Analytic Applications, the pre-built business analysis and reporting solutions, extend the value of existing investments in ERP and other operational systems. These analytics leverage built-in business value, are extensible for competitive business advantage, and offer a production-ready architecture mapped directly against the ERP systems, driving faster time to results.

Orlando Utilities Commission
Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC-The Reliable One) is a municipally owned public utility providing water and electric services to Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of adjoining Orange and Osceola counties. The second-largest public-power utility in Florida and the 16th-largest in the nation, OUC selected Cognos Analytic Applications to more effectively access and report on information in its J.D. Edwards environment.

"Cognos was selected because of its ability to harness J.D. Edwards and other transactional data and transform it into functional and cross-functional views of our business," said Allan Colaço, OUC's director of application systems. "Cognos was unique in its ability to provide enterprise-wide, business-performance measurement solutions that offer ERP source-specific mappings as well as business content in the box. As well, Cognos provides us with a robust, flexible and stable enterprise-reporting engine that will be strategically deployed to our business units to assist them with their reporting needs. The result is the ability to create a single source of performance data and reports, assuring consistency of information across the company."

Turner Industries
Leveraging the rich, built-in business content of Cognos Analytic Applications for J.D. Edwards based on the mission-critical performance of Cognos EBI Series 7, Turner Industries today has an enterprise business intelligence solution that allows robust analysis and highly flexible reporting on more than eight years of historical records, across multiple data sources.

"Cognos offered a solution that was unparalleled in the marketplace from a total cost of ownership perspective. Carefully evaluating the competitive offerings, Cognos Analytic Applications offered us a solution that delivered both rapid time to result and the ease of use that our business users demanded," said Lowell K. Vice, vice-president, CIO, Turner Industries. "In addition, Cognos EBI Series 7 offers the rock-solid enterprise-class BI scalability, performance and manageability we need in our competitive business. Cognos Series 7 has taken everything we've thrown at it and more, giving us access to key information in J.D. Edwards."

"Wherever the data resides, whatever the platform, Cognos is able to rapidly build to a performance management foundation for organizations that were previously grappling with islands of information, IT complexities and uncertainty," said Dave Laverty, senior vice president, global marketing. "The Cognos solution insulates against the potentially changing landscape of operational systems, ensuring executive and management consistency."
