Cognos Announces Support for IBM DB2 Information Integrator Software

— Cognos offers joint customers extended functionality for their diverse data environments to deliver the power of corporate performance management —

BURLINGTON, MA, June 11, 2003—Cognos (NASDAQ:COGN; TSX:CSN), the world leader in business intelligence (BI) and corporate performance management, today continued its support for the IBM DB2 product family by announcing support for IBM's new DB2 Information Integrator software. Based on open standards and a mission to help customers better leverage IT investments, DB2 Information Integrator software helps businesses access and integrate any data wherever it resides, in real-time, as if it were stored in one place, including e-mail, XML, multi-media, Web Services, Life Sciences, and competitive data sources such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases.

Cognos' business intelligence solutions, built upon the crucial database infrastructure layer provided by IBM DB2 Universal Database, offer the benefit of flexible, intuitive data access tools integrated with an efficient, automated data management process. A typical Cognos-DB2 Universal Database solution includes components from the Cognos Enterprise BI Series 7 suite, which brings together a broad range of BI capabilities including managed reporting, analysis, ad hoc query, scorecarding, visualization, ETL, and event detection.

"By supporting the DB2 product family, including DB2 Information Integrator, we are allowing users of Cognos BI Series 7 to discover new ways of meeting their corporate performance management requirements," said Patrick O'Leary, vice president of strategic alliances, Cognos. "With functionalities such as seamless views of multiple disparate data sources and querying across databases, without the overhead or the limitations, DB2 Information Integrator provides an open, extensible, and consistent information integration framework for access to business-critical content."

The federated data access capabilities of DB2 Information Integrator extend Cognos' reach to include non-relational data sources such as any remote SOAP Web Service, Flat Files, and XML files. By accessing message queues, Cognos NoticeCast can monitor real-time data within organizations that have EAI systems. Designed for customers needing critical elements of business activity monitoring (BAM) and guided analysis, Cognos NoticeCast users can define highly personalized business alerts that can be delivered to any e-mail-enabled device. Combined with DB2 Information Integrator, such messages can now include non-relational data sources such as any remote SOAP Web Service, Flat Files, and XML files.

In addition, DB2 Information Integator expands Cognos solution power in the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences industry, providing transparent join access to industry-specific data stores and applications together with XML, relational databases, spreadsheets, and flat files.

"IBM is committed to work with Business Partners that take advantage of DB2 Information Integrator's real-time information integration capabilities to create solutions that solve difficult business problems for customers," said Lauren Flaherty, vice president of marketing, IBM Data Management Solutions. "With Cognos business intelligence solutions and DB2 Information Integrator, businesses can reliably integrate and reconcile the widely dispersed customer data that resides in enterprise applications as well as unstructured document collections across channels, geographies and business units."

In April, Cognos and IBM announced a multi-year global agreement to market comprehensive business intelligence offerings. Under the terms of the agreement, IBM and Cognos will jointly market and sell integrated solutions to numerous verticals and lines of business such as sales, marketing, and human resources. The IBM and Cognos offering makes use of IBM DB2* Universal Database, DB2 Warehouse Manager, DB2 OLAP Server, IBM WebSphere* Internet infrastructure software and IBM WebSphere Portal software, and is available on IBM eServer pSeries, and xSeries systems.
