Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Prescribes
Cognos Business Intelligence

— Leading teaching hospital implements Cognos Enterprise BI Series 7 to analyze, report on critical patient and administrative data —

ORLANDO, FL, COGNOS TECH FORUM, June 10, 2003—Today more than ever, it is critical for hospitals to have a clear view of operations across all departments and to know what's happening with patients, personnel, and resources at any given time. The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, a teaching hospital that provides rehabilitation and complex continuing care, has implemented Cognos (NASDAQ: COGN; TSX: CSN) the world leader in business intelligence (BI) and corporate performance management, to analyze and report on collected patient, clinical, and administrative information to make more informed and coordinated business decisions.

Toronto Rehab cares for 2,055 inpatients annually and has 13,955 outpatient visits in six major program areas: Cardiac, Complex Continuing Care, Geriatric, Musculoskeletal, Neuro, and Spinal Cord. Cognos BI enables employees across the hospital to access critical data including patient discharge data, general ledger, clinical workload measurement, and payroll in a secure environment via their Web browser. With Cognos, hospital administrators can easily spot trends, identify problem areas, and understand the inter-relationships between data and patient care across the hospital.

"Implementing the Cognos solution facilitates quality improvement and best practice research," said Carol Mulder, Director of Information Management, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. "The scientists at Toronto Rehab's new and growing clinical research program are using Cognos to explore issues like admission criteria compliance and predictors of prolonged hospital stays. The Clinical Workload Measurement application enables Toronto Rehab to track the daily workloads of nurses and allied health providers and use that data to perform analysis on the amount and nature of services provided across the hospital. This data represents an excellent tool for Toronto Rehab's staff to compare themselves to peers inside and outside of the hospital to identify opportunities for improvement."

"Delivering quality healthcare in the face of continuous budget pressure is a huge challenge for the healthcare industry. By understanding the predictors of treatment and care, healthcare providers are able to plan for and deliver consistent and predictable care to their communities, while optimizing the use of precious financial and facility resources," said Terence Atkinson, director of public sector solutions, Cognos. "Cognos provides these organizations with a complete business intelligence solution that enables hospitals to optimize resource use, track and analyze clinical information, and improve operational efficiencies, while protecting the confidentiality and security of patient data."

The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute will present their solution at Cognos Tech Forum on Tuesday, June 10 in Orlando, Florida. For more details on Cognos Tech Forum 2003, please visit http://www.cognos.com/na/techforum2003.
