Cognos Extends Enterprise Value of Cognos Series 7 Data Integration

— Organizations like North American travel leader AAA benefits from automation, ease of data warehouse administration —

BURLINGTON, MA, November 19, 2002—Cognos (Nasdaq:COGN; TSX:CSN), the world leader in business intelligence (BI), today announced leading global organizations are benefiting from all new automation features within Cognos DecisionStream, the leading data integration solution in the Cognos Series 7 BI framework. Tested by leading global companies, the new functionality within Cognos Series 7 provides enterprise customers with one of the first solutions that fully automates complicated, maintenance-heavy business transformations, which can involve significant coding with other ETL solutions.

For example, data warehouse administrators struggle with incorporating complex business transformations such as late-arriving facts (e.g. late expense reports) in a data warehouse environment. This process involves the pain-staking insertion of late records into the correct area within the data warehouse. Cognos DecisionStream now fully automates these critical business transformations, enabling administrators to quickly and easily ensure data is consistent for accurate reporting and analysis.

The North American leader in leisure travel, AAA Travel and CAA work with airlines, hotels, car rental firms, tour companies, and cruise lines to send their 45 million members to destinations worldwide. At the AAA National Office near Orlando, Cognos DecisionStream is at work to unify the data from 120 different information sources.

"Cognos DecisionStream is an incredibly powerful data integration tool, offering an ease of administration and automation that allows our staff to accommodate rapid changes in our business. Today we use Cognos DecisionStream in conjunction with Cognos Series 7 analysis to give our business users access to a unified view of our information, to look for both 100,000-foot trends in our business or to easily drill down to individual record sets," said Glen Mac Donell, manager, Data Management and Analysis, AAA National Office. "As a result of using Cognos, we have experienced a dramatic improvement in the way our association monitors its travel business."

Fully integrated within the Cognos Series 7 business intelligence framework, Cognos DecisionStream provides highly visual views of data movements to give administrators an at-a-glance management console. As well, Cognos DecisionStream continues to support ragged hierarchies, merging, aggregation, pivoting, reverse pivoting, incremental loads, slowly changing dimensions (SCDs), surrogates and superior SAP R/3 connectivity.

"Cognos DecisionStream fully integrated into the Cognos Series 7 framework continues to deliver enterprise value. With Cognos DecisionStream enterprises can create a unified information infrastructure and to help achieve the consistency needed for fast, effective decision-making. Many of the world's leading companies rely on the unprecedented breadth and depth of Cognos Series 7 to monitor, analyze and report on their business performance," said Dave Laverty, senior vice president, global marketing, Cognos.
