City of Albuquerque Uses Cognos® Series 7 to Deliver Public Safety Date to Citizens Via 24x7 Extranet

— Officials deliver crime statistics to more than 450,000 city residents —

BURLINGTON, MA, October 1, 2002—How safe is my neighborhood? What crimes are on the rise in my city? The Albuquerque Police Department is able to answer these important questions and more for residents of one of New Mexico's largest cities through a 24 x7 public Extranet site. Working with CognosŪ (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence (BI), the City of Albuquerque has developed a unique e-government site that provides updates on key public safety issues.

The City deployed Cognos Series 7 earlier this year to help build a Web-based analysis and reporting environment that serves up information on specific criminal statistics across the city and neighborhood crime stats. Dealing with vast stores of information resident in local government databases, the City needed a business intelligence solution that would offer both ease of use and scalability.

The City will also leverage the Cognos event detection and notification functionality of Cognos NoticeCast. The City will be working on ways in which to incorporate Cognos Noticecast in their eGovernment initiatives, including the public safety environment.

"Cognos Series 7 offers us a way to keep our residents informed. Everyone from the personnel in my office, to city officials to the average citizen can get daily updates on public safety information across our Extranet site," said Mayor Martin Chavez, City of Albuquerque. "Cognos delivers a solution that anyone can understand, allowing them to view the information that is important to them easily. Given the scope of our project, the City demanded a solution that can deliver 24 x7. We got that and more with Cognos Series 7."

For 300 of the City's workers, police and fire departments, Cognos Series 7 provides an integrated Web-based interface to get point-and-click access to crime, fire, and emergency medical service statistics. Cognos' robust analysis and flexible reporting capabilities on the vast stores of data in disparate information systems allows users to consolidate information and quickly identify trends.

"Under the old system, data collection was an onerous and manual process for city workers. With the Extranet site, the public can access information they need, when they need it. The result has been a dramatic savings in expenditures and person-hours," said Chris Framel, Systems Analyst, City of Albuquerque, "More importantly, we are able to share information between departments, allowing us to work in a more co-ordinated fashion to ensure public safety."

"Cognos Series 7 is being used around the world to support public safety and homeland security applications. The ability to break down islands of information and work with consolidated data on crimes, criminals and other public safety data means more effective policing and ultimately safer streets," said Dave Laverty, senior vice president, global marketing, Cognos.
