Industry-Leading Technology Vendors Endorse Cognos® Web Services

— Universal integration platform for extending industry-leading Cognos Series 7 business intelligence into other applications and environments —

BURLINGTON, MA, August 19, 2002—Cognos (Nasdaq:COGN; TSX:CSN), the world leader in business intelligence (BI), today announced widespread endorsement for Cognos Web Services. Cognos Web Services, available immediately for Microsoft and Unix platforms, is a universal integration platform for extending industry-leading Cognos Series 7 business intelligence into other applications and environments. Using standard Internet technologies such as XML, simple object access protocol (SOAP), and Web services description language (WSDL) to build connections between Cognos software and multiple applications, Cognos Web Services allows customers and industry partners to rapidly integrate Cognos into leading-edge Web, vertical-market, and wireless applications.

"Endorsement for Cognos Web Services has been outstanding," said Patrick O'Leary, Cognos vice president of strategic alliances. "Cognos Web Services adds tremendous value to Cognos Series 7 and continues Cognos' legacy of delivering corporate performance management — uncovering hidden relationships, spotting key trends, and planning more effective strategies using all their business data. Cognos is committed to working with these vendors to reduce the high costs of integration, increasing speed to market and new business opportunities for our customers."

Cognos Web Services has received key endorsements from several industry-leading technology vendors.

(Nasdaq: BEAS). "Our market leading Web services platform can enable customers to integrate Web service enabled business intelligence solutions from leading companies such as Cognos. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Cognos and helping our joint customers quickly and easily extend their business intelligence solutions for better, faster business decisions."

DATAJUNGLE:
"Web Services is poised to take Web-based business intelligence to the next level by allowing business intelligence to reside in any application or on any device," said Denes Bartakovich, President, DataJungle. "But even more than that, with Cognos' implementation of Web Services, customers will be able to extend and customize their Cognos applications to their specific requirements in virtually any way imaginable."

HAPTEK:
"Haptek has always believed that automated characters would be an important component of the user interface of the future — we're very pleased to see Cognos take the lead in this evolution by introducing an advanced yet simple user interface to Cognos business intelligence," said Jack Wiley, co-founder and CFO, Haptek. "Cognos Web Services allows users to take the visionary approach of bringing the human element to business intelligence software. By integrating Haptek's Automated Personalities, Cognos is demonstrating the value of non-repetitive, spontaneous emotions and reactions within the human/computer interface in the business software arena."

HEWLETT-PACKARD:
"Today businesses face a rapidly and ultra-competitive landscape. To respond to this challenge, businesses require a flexible IT infrastructure that enables them to transform their current and future business processes and share these processes with their customers, supplier, and partners," said Nigel Ball, Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Solutions Partners. "Through our partnership with Cognos, and with the launch of Cognos Web Services, HP and Cognos will allow our customers to form tighter relationships, improve business collaboration, and generate new revenue opportunities by exposing existing assets and leveraging them into new business models."

MACROMEDIA:
"Macromedia built its product family to be open enough to ensure easy integration with leading solutions such as Cognos Web Services," said David Mendels, senior vice president, Macromedia. ONYX SOFTWARE:
"Because Cognos Web Services allows for content from a Cognos application to be displayed in a custom fashion, within an existing user interface, with less effort, we look forward to working with our customers to bring the power of business intelligence to Onyx portals," said Eben Frankenberg, vice president at Onyx Software. "Like Onyx, Cognos understands an organization's critical need to anticipate customer behavior and quickly respond to the changing marketplace. The incorporation of Cognos Web Services is a critical piece of how we deliver the real-time information that can help our customers achieve CRM success and business value."

PLUMTREE:
"Plumtree has developed an architecture based completely on Web services, designed to support portal deployments spanning an entire organization, which is more practical and less expensive than converting all the systems to run on one platform or one network," said Hilary Jules, director of alliances at Plumtree. "This architecture will give joint customers an open and flexible way to quickly integrate Cognos Web Services into their Plumtree portal platforms, empowering business people to access strategic data and make decisions quickly."
