Cognos Strengthens Presence in Japan

— Business Intelligence Leader Continues Strong Momentum in Japanese Market —

TOKYO, JAPAN, May 21, 2002—Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSE: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence (BI), today announced the opening of its wholly owned Japanese subsidiary, Cognos K.K. The announcement follows the recent planned expiration of Cognos' joint venture with Teijin Limited in Japan and Cognos' repurchase of all of Teijin's interest in Teijin Cognos Incorporated. The initiative confirms Cognos' commitment to Japan as a strategic market for business intelligence.

Cognos' momentum in Japan comes as IDC projects the business intelligence market in the Asia/Pacific region to surpass $1.1 billion by 2006, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 17.5% between 2000 and 2006. (Source: IDC, 2002)

Cognos has long recognized the opportunity for business intelligence in Japan, establishing its first subsidiary in 1989. In 1996, Cognos entered into a joint venture with Teijin Limited, expanding its sales force and strengthening its market position by joining with a Japanese corporate leader. The joint venture provided the basis for a successful penetration of Cognos® BI solutions into the Japanese market.

"I believe that Japan is the sleeping giant of regional markets for business intelligence," said Ron Zambonini, chief executive officer, Cognos. "Already, we are seeing widespread endorsement of Cognos BI and our corporate performance management vision among our Japanese customers and partners. Cognos is committed to continued strong leadership of this growing market."

Mr. Kazumi Tagami, who had previously managed the Teijin Cognos joint venture, will lead the new subsidiary as part of Cognos' worldwide operations.

"We would like to thank Teijin Limited for their support over the past six years, and will use this strong, established base to expand our presence in the Japanese marketplace," said Kazumi Tagami, President, Cognos K.K. "Cognos business intelligence enables our Japanese customers to fulfill their corporate performance management strategies by aligning the activities and decisions of individual workers across the enterprise with the strategic goals of their business. We will continue to work to make our current and future customers the most effective organizations in the world."

Cognos' Japanese customer Casio Computer Co. Ltd. is one of the leading consumer electronics companies in the world. The company develops electronic calculators, timepieces, musical instruments, LCD TVs, pagers and other communications devices.

"Since we began using Cognos PowerPlay® at our domestic sales division seven years ago, it has become an essential tool used across our sales headquarters, from our front sales staff to the senior management team," said Mr. Syuichi Matsunoshita, Customer Relations Group, Casio Computer Co., Ltd. "We use Cognos to analyze sales performance, transactions, inventory and accounts receivable across a variety of dimensions."
