AdvisorsThe Cognos Innovation Center for Performance Management has partnered with industry thought leaders to help organizations turn corporate performance management ‘best practices’ into everyday procedure. The featured thought leaders have written several articles for the Innovation Center’s Ideas in Action series and frequently speak at Innovation Center events throughout the world.
Frank E. Borgsmiller Principal, Deloitte Consulting, LLP Frank Borgsmiller serves as the National Operations Leader for Deloitte’s Financial Management Services Practice and as the Regional Practice Leader for Mid America. His extensive experience serving clients includes functional Finance areas such as: Finance strategy and visioning, business process improvement for core processes such as planning, budgeting and forecasting, and enterprise performance management. In addition, Frank has helped develop and lead the firm’s national training programs on a variety of financial topics. Bryan Hall Practice Leader, Finance Advisory Program, The Hackett Group Bryan Hall is the Global Practice Leader for The Hackett Group’s Finance Advisory Program and is responsible for advising leading organizations on the key issues and opportunities facing the finance function. Over his twenty year career in finance and accounting, he has served as both a CFO and Controller, and has assisted organizations in their transformation efforts as a consultant. He has focused on process transformation driven by the adoption of best practices and technologies to enable world-class performance. Prior to joining The Hackett Group, Bryan was a Controller with United Parcel Service and the Chief Financial Officer for Keyeon (now BroadVision). He holds an MBA from Emory University and is a Certified Management Accountant.
Jeremy Hope Research Director, BBRT Jeremy Hope is the author of a number of articles and books on performance management and associated leadership issues. His article Beyond Budgeting with colleague Robin Fraser won the prestigious IFAC award for best management accounting article of 1998. He is co-author (with Robin Fraser) of a recent article entitled Who Needs Budgets in the Harvard Business Review, February 2003. He is co-author (with Robin Fraser) of the new book Beyond Budgeting published by the Harvard Business School Press in March 2003. Jeremy is also co-author (with his brother Tony Hope) of two earlier books, Transforming the Bottom Line (1995) and Competing in the Third Wave (1997), both published by the Harvard Business School Press. Both books have been translated into many languages and won coveted awards in the USA. He has given numerous keynote speeches at major conferences on performance management topics. Jeremy began his career as a chartered accountant and has since worked extensively in venture capital and business management. For the past five years, his work has been focused on the "Beyond Budgeting" concept. He is currently research director of the Beyond Budgeting Round Table (BBRT), an organization dedicated to helping firms improve their performance management processes.
Jeremy is currently writing a series of articles for Innovation Center members called “Transforming Performance Management.” A new article is released each month. Brett Knowles Founding partner, Performance Measurement and Management (PM²) Brett Knowles has been a thought leader in the performance measurement space for 20 years. Brett co-founded the first balanced scorecard software package and is currently president of Performance Measurement and Management. Brett has helped over 1,000 organizations on their scorecard journeys and has developed over 2,000 scorecards. Drs. Kaplan and Norton—founders of the Balanced Scorecard—have placed three of Brett’s clients on their Hall of Fame for best-in-the-world scorecards and have profiled several of his clients in their books and articles.
Brett has developed a series of web seminars exclusively for Innovation Center members. Steve Lukens Global Leader of Financial Management Consulting Services Steve Lukens is an IBM Global Business Services Partner based in New York. Steve is currently leading the integration of Global Business Services with Cognos following IBM’s acquisition of Cognos in early 2008. Steve served as IBM’s Global Leader of Financial Management Consulting Services from 2006 - 2007. Prior to that, he held a series of roles in Financial Management Consulting and Business Transformation Outsourcing. Steve has spent 26 years at Price Waterhouse, PwC Consulting and IBM providing operational improvement assistance, process redesign and change management services to a variety of multi-national, multi-billion dollar organizations. For more than fifteen years, he has focused his consulting work on improving the finance function of large complex companies. He was a contributing author to PwC’s book CFO: Architect of the Corporation’s Future and a frequent speaker on topics of interest to CFO’s such as The Agile CFO: Enabling the Innovation Path to Growth, The Finance Function of the Future, Blow up the Budget: New Approaches to Business Planning, and Shared Services: Myth vs. Reality. In addition, he is the author of numerous articles and white papers on the future of the finance function.
Prof. Dr. Wilfried Lux Head of Competence Center for Finance and Controlling Institute of Business Management (IFU-FHS) FHS, St. Gallen – University of Applied Sciences Prof Dr. Wilfried Lux is the leader of the Competency Center of Finance and Controlling at the College of St. Gallen in Switzerland. In this role, he is conducting research in Strategy and Performance Management and teaching an MBA course. He is also the author of various publications. Prior to being appointed the head of the competency center, Prof. Dr. Lux gained extensive industry experience through international consulting and finance roles in leading organizations. He obtained his Ph.D. in business administration from the renowned Business School of St. Gallen.
Frank S. Mackris Managing Director, BearingPoint, Inc. Frank Mackris serves in a dual role leading the Banking Practice and Enterprise Performance Improvement Solutions for the Financial Services Segment at BearingPoint. He is a CPA with extensive experience in large-scale finance transformation, business intelligence, strategic cost management, profitability reporting, and performance measurement. Frank is a leader in the industry, a frequent speaker at conferences, and authored the Banking Industry and Capacity Measurement chapters in the Handbook of Cost Management, Service Industry Edition. Earlier in his career at KPMG Consulting (legacy firm to BearingPoint), Frank consulted and collaborated with Dr. Robert S. Kaplan and Dr. Robin Cooper, the “Fathers of ABC”, on application of ABC to the Banking industry. Frank has recently developed a breakthrough solution for the Financial Services industry called “Technology Cost Transparency.” Frank has been a long-time implementer of Cognos solutions and brings a real-world perspective to implementing business intelligence and performance measurement solutions.
Lawrence Maisel Co-founding Partner of DecisionVu: A seasoned business executive who has successfully demonstrated abilities to provide leadership in Strategy and Financial Management, and Information Technology. He has numerous experiences in Financial Services, Insurance, Communications and Media, Pharmaceuticals, and Consumer Products industries where he has developed business strategies, managed and improved business performance, implemented business systems, and designed solutions to increase operating performance and shareholder value. Larry co-created with Drs. Kaplan and Norton, the Balanced Scorecard, co-authored with Drs. Kaplan and Cooper “Implementing Activity-Based Cost Management”. He is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's Graduate Business School where he teaches Strategy Management. Roland Mosimann CEO and Co-founder of Business Intelligence International Roland is an industry veteran who has helped drive leadership initiatives around BI and performance management since 1995. In 2004 he drove the launch of the Aline™ platform for on-demand Governance, Risk and Compliance. He co-authored The Multidimensional Manager - 24 Ways to Impact Your Bottom Line in 90 Days and The Multidimensional Organization: How to Deliver the 24 Ways. Demand led to the printing of more than 400,000 copies and these books remain in use by organizations worldwide today. He recently co-authored The Performance Manager: Proven Strategies for Turning Information into Higher Business Performance, which is available on Amazon.com. Patrick Mosimann Founding and Joint Managing Director of PMSI Consulting Patrick is a seasoned performance management practitioner with extensive experience in developing business-led solutions that support decision makers. He has led several unique client engagements across consumer goods, manufacturing, retail and services industry sectors. He recently co-authored The Performance Manager: Proven Strategies for Turning Information into Higher Business Performance, which is available on Amazon.com. Dr. David P. Norton President, Palladium David Norton is a cofounder and President of Palladium. Prior to his career at Palladium, Dr. Norton co-founded and served as President and CEO of Balanced Scorecard Collaborative. He was also President of Renaissance Solutions, Inc., a Balanced Scorecard consulting firm and cofounder and President of Nolan, Norton & Company. He is coauthor, with Robert S. Kaplan, of The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy Into Action (Harvard Business School Publishing, 1996), The Strategy-Focused Organization: How Balanced Scorecard Companies Thrive in the New Business Environment (Harvard Business School Publishing, 2000) and Strategy Maps: Converting Intangible Assets into Tangible Outcomes (Harvard Business School Publishing, 2004), along with four articles on the Balanced Scorecard in the Harvard Business Review. Steve Player Director, BBRT North America Steve Player, CPA, serves as the North American Program Director for the Beyond Budgeting Round Table, an international network focused on improving planning and control; he is also Managing Director of The Player Group. Previously, Steve was the Managing Partner of Arthur Andersen's Advanced Cost Management Team. He is the co-author/editor of four books on Activity-Based Management including Lessons From the ABM Battlefield, which is forwarded by Stephen Covey. Steve founded and runs the Activity-Based Management Advanced Implementation Group, whose members include Bell South and Bell Canada. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing - International (CAM-I) and provided insight for the AICPA Industry and Management Accounting Executive Committee. Scott W. Sognefest Principal, Deloitte Consulting, LLP Scott Sognefest is a principal with Deloitte Consulting’s Information Dynamics practice and national leader of the Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing service offering. He has extensive experience delivering complex global solutions focused on all aspects of business intelligence, data warehousing, performance measurement, master data management and business case development for enterprise information management programs. Mitchell Weisberg Senior Principal and Practice Leader for Business Performance Management, HP Mitchell Weisberg has over 30 years of experience consulting to organizations on performance management and technology driven business process improvement and significant experience in leading corporate performance management and Balanced Scorecard engagements within the Pharma/Biotech industry. Mitchell has been a global practice leader in several major consulting firms (Arthur D. Little, KPMG, Nolan Norton, Symmetrix, WatsonWyatt) and a Director of Strategic Planning at Motorola. In addition, Mitchell has led client organizations in business visioning, planning, strategy implementation, performance management and process improvement. Mitchell was a member of the team that developed the Balanced Scorecard with Norton and Kaplan in 1991. He has customized and implemented this methodology and other performance management approaches in multiple organizations and has trained practitioners in these methodologies. Recently he worked with a large biotech company to develop and pilot their custom performance management methodology. He has worked with and advised senior executives on creating the High Performance Organization, strategy execution and change management.
